Hello Nurses
I am a new grad with a problem. I have been working for a company for years as a tech and at the top of my pay scale. Now that I am a grad nurse they have offered me a staff nurse position. I have a feeling that they want me to perform my old duties in addition to my new nurse duties and do not plan on paying me much more than I already make(50 cents-1.00 dollar) more. Help! I really like the company but not going to be taken advantage of because I am a new nurse. How do I ask for more? or Do I move on?

You need to g to your boss and be nice but be assertive and tell them, but do your homework 1st aboutwhat the starting scale pay is for your position and what your job duties are and point out that this is what's going on.

Yes, do your homework first. Contact other facilities in your area, many times they will not reveal what their starting salaries are for new grad nurses so you have to be a little clever. Tell them you are doing a survey for your on-campus nursing group and are gathering information on:
1) starting salaries
2) turnover rate
3) vacancy rate
4) nurse to patient ratios on various units; med-surg, stepdown, ICU/CCU, etc.
5) Magnet Status or pursuing Magnet Status?

If it appears that you are looking for more information than just money stats, they will usually hand it over quickly and if they still decline, simply state: "okay, I will just put down that your facility declined to participate" Be professional, be firm... and remember you don't have to use your real name.

I did this same thing and asked for even more information than this for hospitals up and down the eastern seaboard, the midwest and the west... got GREAT results and had a GREAT database of knowledge that helped me make my decision.

Good luck!
